The entrance to the A1 near Oldenzaal is still closed due to farmers’ protests, the ANWB reports. The entrance to the highway is closed in both directions. Farmers dumped rubble on the driveway and started a fire. It was restless in several places last night, but most problems have been resolved.

Last night, farmers across the country took to the streets to take action. Hay bales were set on fire, fireworks were set off and agricultural vehicles took to the highway. Asbestos was set on fire on the A50 near Beekbergen in the east of the country, the police reported. Part of the road there also had to be closed.

On the A7 near Purmerend towards Hoorn, 25 tractor units entered the highway, reports regional broadcaster NH. Traffic was diverted via a gas station because the highway was closed.

In addition to the rubble at Oldenzaal, an exit at Hengelo was closed on the A1 due to a demonstration. Action was also taken on highways near Breukelen, Purmerend, Nunspeet, Vuren, Veenendaal and Steenwijk. The police had to intervene in several places, although this was not possible everywhere. Earlier in the day there were protests at the Belgian border.

The East Netherlands police previously said that many unsafe situations have arisen due to the disturbances. “Dumping and setting waste on fire is a danger to health and the environment. Dangerous situations also arise on the road.” The police also said that criminal offenses have been committed.

Green Deal

The farmers are protesting because of dissatisfaction with European rules and the European Green Deal to make Europe climate neutral by 2050. Today the European Union is meeting to discuss those rules.
