Farmers’ Protests Cause Highway Closures and Asbestos Cleanup in the Netherlands – Latest Updates

Feb 6, 2024 at 12:09 AM Update: 32 minutes ago

Most roads that were closed on Monday evening due to farmers’ protests have reopened. The A7 was closed for hours, but is open again in both directions. The A50 near Beekbergen is completely closed due to asbestos that needs to be cleaned up.

Farmers took to the highways again on Monday evening to protest. This happened, among other things, on the A7 near Purmerend and the A50 near Apeldoorn. Both roads were closed and fires were made in both places using wood, car tires and waste.

Asbestos has also burned on the A50, the police report. Specialists will clean up the waste tonight. “This could take all night. There were many incidents tonight: we are now making an inventory. Hopefully more information will be provided about this tomorrow,” the police wrote. X.

Protests also took place on the A12 near Veenendaal, the A2 near Breukelen, the A28 near ‘t Harde, the A32 near Steenwijk, the A1 near Merkelo and the A28 between Meppel and Staphorst, regional media wrote. The latter road would have been closed in both directions, it was reported RTV Drenthe. The police and ANWB cannot confirm this. The broadcaster now reports that the road is open again.

The N36 between Ommen and Almelo at the N34 was also closed in both directions on Monday. The road is still closed, as can be seen on the ANWB website.

Mayor of Vijfheerenlanden Sjors Fröhlich reported X that farmers also took action on the Parallelweg in Meerkerk, near the A27. Hay bales were set on fire. According to the mayor, the protest caused nuisance and a speed limit on the highway and the police were present to manage the protest.

Once again farmer actions in various places in the Netherlands

East Netherlands Police takes action

The protests created unsafe situations in the east of the country, the police reported. The police in Gelderland reported that action was taken in several places. “Demonstrations are allowed within the limits of the law, but that is not the case here. A fire has been set, fireworks have been set off and agricultural vehicles are driving on the highway.”

It is not clear exactly where the intervention took place. “Our commitment consists of disrupting and (subsequently) enforcing criminal activities. The police take these facts seriously. Dumping and setting fire to waste is a danger to health and the environment. Dangerous situations also arise on the route.”

Last week, farmers in the Netherlands also took to the highways several times to protest. They did this after farmers demonstrated earlier in several other European countries.
