With a mission to address the challenges and opportunities facing the agricultural sector, the alliance will bring together farmers, agri-businesses, rural communities and other stakeholders, to work towards a more sustainable and prosperous farming industry. Stay tuned to discover more about the Farmers’ Alliance and its plans for the future, as we take a closer look at this exciting development in Irish agriculture.
The Farmers’ Alliance, Ireland’s newest farming organization, will have its official launch at a gathering in Athlone this weekend. Speaking at the event will be Caroline van der Plas, the leader of the Dutch pro-farming political party, BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB). The party recently won 17 seats in the Dutch senate and describes itself as the “voice of and for the countryside”. The Farmers’ Alliance was established after a meeting organized through the Ireland Farm Discussion Group Facebook page in February, and Liam McLaughlin, one of the page’s creators, is among the organizers of the new group. McLaughlin said that there is massive interest across the country from both farmers and non-farmers in the organization, with people eager to become members before it is even officially launched. At the gathering, there will be speakers from dairy, beef, sheep, and poultry farming sectors, and the Farmers’ Alliance hopes to set up an all-island co-op to work with small merchants and family-owned businesses to import goods. The group also aims to address issues such as greenways and the access to finance for farmers.
