Farmer Protesters in France Set Fire to Customs Office in Nimes

Farmer protesters in France set fire to a customs office in the commune of Nimes, the prefect of the Gard department, Jerome Bonnet, said on the social network X.

“This evening from 19.15 there was a fire at the customs point in Nimes, presumably caused by people breaking in with agricultural machinery. The fire is still ongoing,” he wrote.

Bonet “strongly condemned” the damage caused. He said that they are already looking for the culprits.

This is not the first arson set by farmers protesting in France. In particular, on January 26, protesters burned the building of the social insurance service in Narbonne. Before this, demonstrators threw burning tires at the building of the prefecture of the commune of Agen and splashed it with manure.

Mass protests by farmers have been ongoing since January 18. The reason was the upcoming increase in the cost of diesel fuel, a drop in income due to the import of Ukrainian grain into the country and the complexity of bureaucratic procedures. Farmers mostly block roads in protest, including with tractors and combine harvesters.

Prime Minister of France Gabriel Attal On January 26, he announced a number of measures that should satisfy the demands of the protesters. These include the creation of a €50 million emergency fund for farmers and the simplification of rules and regulations related to agriculture.
