It is the horror notion of every motorist: when driving on the motorway at full speed, a vehicle comes towards you in its own lane – a ghost driver! On Saturday afternoon, this horror on the A 6 between Bern and Thun BE at Rubigen BE became a reality. An 82-year-old was wrong in the direction of travel and caused three accidents with eight vehicles involved within a few hundred meters.
–
Two people were taken to hospital with injuries. But the worst hit was the ghost driver himself: the 82-year-old’s SUV came to rest on its side and was completely demolished. All help came too late for the driver – he died on the scene of the accident. Now research shows: The wrong-way driver is farmer Alfons T. * († 82) from Hasle near Burgdorf BE in Emmental.

Second fatal traffic accident in the family
The shock in the neighborhood of the sheep farmer is great. “I assume that he was on the way to his sheep,” says a neighbor. Because the father of four daughters was no longer able to walk well, he moved the majority of his herd to the daughter in Thun. “Only three sheep stayed with him,” said the neighbor. The neighbor therefore assumes that the widowed man wanted to visit his animals when he got on the wrong lane.
–
The accident was a hard blow especially for the daughter, who still lives on her parents’ farm: “Two years ago, she lost her 18-year-old son in a traffic accident. And now the police rang the doorbell with a sad message. Everything must have come back up. » Alfons T. had also not been the same since the accident.

Werner Grossenbacher describes himself as the dead man’s best friend. He says there have already been signs that the pensioner’s ability to drive has deteriorated recently: “Usually he always greeted me when he drove past me or he stopped,” says Grossenbacher. In recent times, however, the greeting has failed to appear. «I assume that he may not have seen me at the side of the road anymore. He’s been seeing worse and worse lately. »

Alfons T. was actually a good driver
That is why Alfons T. drove only short distances within the community. For his beloved animals, the 82-year-old apparently nevertheless ventured onto the highway – a fatal mistake.
–
The deceased was always an experienced driver, so his best friend: “He drove a jeep in the military. And when we did something together, he always drove. Because he was simply the better driver. »

The Bern prosecutor’s office said nothing about the state of health of the injured on Sunday. The relatives of Alfons T. did not want to comment on BLICK.
