(November 30, 2024) With 63 points conceded in the first half, RASTA Vechta II had a heavy load on Saturday night. And so in the end it was no longer enough for the head coach of the team Hendrik Gruhn to win on the 11th match day of the 2nd basketball BARMER Bundesliga ProA against the Dresden Titans. Despite a great comeback in front of 307 spectators in the RASTA Dome, the Vechta team lost to the Saxons with 97:100 (54:63).
In short
The eleventh loss in a row wasn’t really due to a lack of success on offense. RASTA II, with new USA man Phil Carr and returnee Luc van Slooten in the team, were delighted with big chances, kept the rebound duel open and fought relentlessly. But as the Dresden Titans hit 13 of their 21 three-pointers in the first half and RASTA II missed a total of 19 balls, Vechta’s team came away empty-handed again. This was also due to the strong performance of Titans Wes Dreamer and Matt Ragsdale, who scored a combined 53 points, Ragsdale hit six of seven three balls. Dane Jonathan Klussmann was the top scorer for Vechta with 23 points, followed by USA boy Luke House (20).

The voices about the game
Hendrik Gruhn (Head coach of Vechta II): “If you score 63 points in a half, you cannot expect to win a game. I think the fact that we were able to make it so close at the end and have a chance to win the game has something to do with Dresden’s chances going down in the second half – that is that we hoped for. They scored at an incredibly high rate in the first half, which really hurt us. There were also a lot of difficult throws. But still: Under no circumstances can you let a team score 63 points in one half. We fought and gave it our all. I would have been very happy about my first win, and probably the boys would have been too. It is very difficult now, everyone is aware of that. But what you shouldn’t forget is that we basically played with a new team today. We haven’t been able to have twelve guys or rotate a lot in the last ten games – for various reasons. That’s why this is a new situation for us. We had a new player in Phil Carr, who has only trained with us three times, but did a great job today and made a big impact. Luc van Slooten was there again. These are all features that come in. Now is the time to get to know each other, keep coming together, keep working and believing in each other. Jonathan Klussmann played an outstanding game. He was very aggressive with his moves to the basket. Kaya had a great time in the 4th quarter with his three points. But we still didn’t have enough defense in the first half.”
Fabian Strauß (Dresden head coach): “First of all I have to say: crazy game. We left too many opportunities to do the thing. Exactly what I told my boys happened. Vechta knows about his quality. They know they can turn a game around and decide it from the three point line. Unfortunately, in the second half we let this happen too often, we turned badly or made mistakes in defense. In some cases, the Vechta team made good use of this. In the end, I would say we were a bit more torn. The right people had the ball in their hands and made the right decisions in the end. That’s why I’m proud of my boys that we were able to bring him home.”
1 quarter
The first points in the RASTA Dome went to Phil Carr, followed by ten Dresden points (2:10, 3rd minute). RASTA II was unable to stop the Titans’ famous fast game and surrendered six three-pointers before the first break. Five turnovers in the first period also contributed to Vechta’s team being repeatedly put away. Wes Dreamer and Matt Ragsdale had scored 17 points together after ten minutes, Dresden leading 30:23. On Vechta’s side, Jonathan Klussmann was very prominent here. The Dane sent Dreamer to the ground in the 9th minute and scored beyond 6.75 meters to make it 19:24 and scored at halftime at the end of the 1st quarter. The highlight, however, was a bump with the new Vechtaer: Phil Carr called Koen Sapwell on the poster (9:30pm, 10th).
2nd quarter
After the Titans made six three-pointers in the first quarter, they followed with seven more in the second quarter – out of ten attempts. RASTA II was almost inferior, scoring five out of eight attempts. One of these from Linus Trettin made it 34:37 in the 14th minute. After Ragsdale’s three ball to make it 48:38 (17th), the guests were back with double digits and a little later after the next three points from Dresden’s #24 they were even with 14 points – 41 :55 (18th). What followed was a very hot stage for Luke’s House at Vechta: The forward hit a three-pointer in the last 73 seconds of the first half, so that RASTA II was only behind at 54:63 at the big break
3rd quarter
Dreamer’s three free throws put the Saxons ahead 68:56 (22nd). In the middle of the third quarter, Lukas Zerner scored for the team of head coach Fabian Strauss to make it 75:62 (25th). RASTA II picked up, Karl Bühner made it 69:75 from his offensive rebound – time out Dresden (26th). Gruhn’s team held Dresden to just 18 points in the third quarter, the Titans – like RASTA II – only hit one three-pointer. However, seven turnovers in this section prevented the guests from being much closer to the Saxons than six points (75:81) at the next break.
4th quarter
It took three full minutes for RASTA II to get on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter. Kaya Bayram scored from the center of the city to make it 78:82 (33rd). The point guard also scored the next Vechta goals, both three-pointers, RASTA II led by 84:83 – Dresden time period (36th). After this, the guests scored seven points in a row (90:84, 37th), which made Hendrik Gruhn take time out. Dreamer and Ragsdale took over again for the Dresden Titans. Good minutes before the end, Ragsdale was responsible for the 99:94 (39th) with his points 27 and 28. RASTA II did not give up and fought for one last chance. With just under nine seconds left on the clock, Vechta’s team got the Wilson in the Dresden half and they could have made it 100:100 with three points and so they reached overtime. However, the RASTA players had no luck with the team that was so good in the second half and that left disappointment on the floor of the RASTA Dome.

## Can Rasta Vechta II Shake Off the Losing Streak? An Expert Interview
**World Today News**: This past Saturday, the RASTA Vechta II suffered their eleventh consecutive loss, falling to Dresden Titans 97-100 despite a valiant comeback effort in the second half.
To get a better understanding of this game and where RASTA II goes from here, we spoke with **Marco Kleinschmidt**, a long-time basketball analyst based in Germany, who has been following the ProA league closely for years.
**World Today News**: Marco, thanks for joining us. RASTA II seemed to be on track for another heavy defeat, trailing by 14 points at halftime, yet they battled back in the second half. What were the key factors in that second-half comeback?
**Marco Kleinschmidt**: RASTA II showed a lot of heart and grit in the second half. They tightened up their defense considerably, making it much harder for the Titans to convert from three-point range, which was Dresden’s key weapon in the first half. Offensively, they found a rhythm with Kaya Bayram hitting crucial three-pointers and Jonathan Klussmann continuing his strong scoring throughout the game.
**World Today News**: Despite the late rally, it wasn’t enough for the win. What do you see as the main reason RASTA II fell short?
**Marco Kleinschmidt**: Ultimately,RASTA II dug themselves too deep a hole in the first half. You can’t let a team like Dresden shoot almost 60% from three-point range in a half and then expect to easily close the gap. The turnover battle also favored Dresden, and those extra possessions proved costly.
**World Today News**: RASTA II has introduced some new players, including Phil Carr and the returning Luc Van Slooten. How have these additions impacted the team?
**Marco Kleinschmidt**: It’s still early days for these new players, but Phil Carr has looked promising so far, contributing physically with some strong drives to the basket.Luc Van Slooten provides valuable experience and a steady hand, which will be crucial as the season progresses. Remember, they face a challenge of incorporating these players quickly while also battling a losing streak.
**World Today News**: Looking ahead, what are the biggest challenges facing RASTA II for the rest of the season?
**Marco Kleinschmidt**: First and foremost, they need to fix their defensive lapses in the first half of games. Falling behind early has become a recurring theme, and they need to find a way to come out stronger defensively from the start. Secondly, they need to build chemistry and cohesion as a team, which will take time with these recent additions. they need to find ways to consistently execute their offence and avoid costly turnovers. husband, I think they have the talent to turn things around.
**World Today News**: Thanks for your insights, marco. We appreciate your time.
**Marco Kleinschmidt**: My pleasure.
