AISOD cries and remembers Professor Giovanni Manani
He was the founding father of Italian Dental Anesthesiology and, in his long career, he treated more than 60 thousand patients. The Italian Association of Sedation Dentists (AISOD) remembers the professor with esteem, gratitude and affection Giovanni Mananiwho passed away last November 13th. Born in Udine on 2 December 1936, he would soon have turned 88.
Professor Manani graduated from the University of Padua in 1963 and was a specialist in Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, Toxicology and General Surgery. His extraordinary professional curriculum includes the presidency of the College of Chiefs of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation of the Triveneto, teaching at the School of Specialization in Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, at the Degree Course in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics (CLOPD), at the one in Dental Hygiene and the direction of the Master’s “Sedation and emergencies in dentistry” of the University of Padua. Professor Manani was also the author of over 300 publications including the treatise on “Dental Anesthesia and Emergencies”, a reference text for fellow university professors, for students, and for all dentists, both hospital and non-hospital. Finally, it was he who founded AISOD in 2008, of which he has always been a great supporter.
Professor Manani must be recognized as the founding father of Italian Dental Anesthesiology which, thanks to his research and publications, has become the heritage of all Italian schools of dentistry.

Dedicated to his institutional duty, brilliant in teaching, research and patient care, Giovanni has made the safe, effective and humane treatment of anxious, complex and fragile dental patients possible. Operations that once required general anesthesia can now be carried out in the dental chair in a safe and effective way, with patient satisfaction, saving time and economic resources. He contributed significantly to the professional training of Italian dentists thanks to his teachings and his daily example”.
From teaching to professional training to scientific research, Giovanni Manani has always promoted the functions of academic life and, by transferring the results of research to civil society, he has contributed to the cultural and social development of our territory.
“Giovanni – continue from AISOD – here in Padua he was an absolute protagonist of the study of modern Italian Anesthesiology, not only dental. It is enough to remember the technique of the so-called “neuroleptoanalgesia” or the techniques of loco-regional anesthesia, such as that of the anesthetic block of the brachial plexus. It was he, since the 1990s, who scientifically defined Italian dental anesthesiology, in light of a first commandment: “The patient has the right to receive, and the healthcare professional has the duty to guarantee, a diagnostic therapeutic path free of anxiety and pain”.
Courageous innovator, generous teacher, tireless scientist, Giovanni Manani dedicated his life to the study of dental anesthesiology and the central role of the dentist in this discipline.
“He taught us – conclude from AISOD – that the management of pain and anxiety of the dental patient is a fundamental responsibility for a holistic treatment of the human being. He transmitted to all of us, his students, the energy and determination to continue the path he traced. Thank you very much, Giovanni”.
