Farewell to Summer: Vienna’s Municipal Outdoor Pools Closing for the Season

Sunday is the last day of swimming in Vienna’s municipal outdoor pools – from Monday only a few private pools and natural swimming areas will be open

On Sunday, in almost midsummer temperatures, the Viennese stormed the city’s outdoor swimming pools one last time this year. In the evening it’s time for swimming to close until May 2024. From Monday you can only enjoy the cool water in a few private pools or at the natural swimming areas between Wienerberg-Ziegelteich, Donauinsel, Lobau or Hirschstetten bathing pond.

Even though, according to Vienna’s baths, the exact figures will only be announced on Monday, it could be assumed that the 1.9 million visitors from last year came back this year. Even though May was “a total failure” according to Martin Kotinsky from the Vienna Baths, according to ORF they had already managed 1.8 million visitors by the end of August – the beautiful Indian summer in the first half of September probably caused an even bigger rush. Kotinsky left it unclear on Sunday whether the two million mark could actually be broken.

The biggest rush on a single day this year was on July 9th with 83,000 admissions, which was of course far below the record levels of the years before Corona, where the strongest individual days shone with visitor numbers of over 100,000. This year we are also a long way from the previous annual record of 3.2 million guests in 2015.
