Gerry Marsden, lead singer of the British band Gerry and the Pacemakers, has died at the age of 78 after a brief illness. This was reported today by a family friend. The singer who passed away in the past few hours has become famous in the Merseybeat music scene and for having sung the anthem of the fans You Never Walk Alone.

“It is with a very heavy heart after talking to the family that I have to tell you that the legendary Gerry Marsden after a short illness due to an infection in his heart has sadly passed away,” radio host Pete Price posted on Twitter.

Marsden formed the band in 1959 and had success on the charts in the following decades as part of Liverpool’s Merseybeat movement. Among the other singers who have had to do with the movement is a band that changed the history of music, namely the Beatles. The band’s 1963 version of You Never Walk Alone became Liverpool Football Club’s anthem in the Premier League. Dozens of fans have resumed and sang the song over the years.
Liverpool posted a tribute to the late singer, underlining the song’s importance to his history. They commented: “Gerry’s voice accompanied our most important evenings. His anthem brought together players, staff and fans from all over the world, helping to create something truly special ”. The song “You Never Walk Alone” accompanied tens of thousands of football supporters all over the world.
