The last farewell to Jiří Menzel will finally take place. It will be possible to pay tribute to the Oscar-winning director on Friday 18 September from 10 am in the foyer of the Prague Rudolfinum. The widow Olga Menzelová announced it on Facebook.
“You will hear music from his films, you will be able to enroll in condolence books and before Rudolfinum you will be able to relive memories of Jirka and his films by watching a small exhibition The Whimsical Years of Jiří Menzel,” she described what will happen in Rudolfinum. Its gates will remain open to everyone who wants to say goodbye to Menzel.
The director, who died last Saturday, vehemently refused a public funeral. But Menzelová listened to the fans. They wanted to bow to the great Czech film for the last time.
“I don’t want to have a funeral because I know how it annoys people that they have to go and wear flowers and cry and shake hands,” Menzel explained his position to Nova seven years ago. “It’s a stupid circus. I don’t want it. I don’t want a funeral once the body box is here, so burn it, scatter it, forget it. The important thing is that there are some movies left, they’ll be remembered for a few years, but like going to the grave, that’s nonsense, “the director was clear.
The Dvořák Prague Festival will directly follow the reverential event for Menzel on Friday. Rudolfinum will play the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was one of the director’s favorite composers.
