Farewell to Kanam Rajendran: Mourning journey to Kottayam; Thousands paid their respects along the way

Thiruvananthapuram / Kottayam ∙ Farewell to Kanam Rajendran who led the CPI with bold words and strict stance. The funeral procession carrying his mortal remains will soon reach his native Kottayam. After paying a public darshan at the Pattam PS memorial, which is the CPI headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, he left for his native Kottayam as a mourning procession. A huge crowd can be seen on the journey.

CPI district secretary V.B.B will receive the body at Changanassery, the border of Kottayam district. Workers and leaders from the district will accompany the mourning procession. Workers and people can pay their last respects at Chingavanam, Kurichi, Natakam and Tirunakkara. After a public vigil at CPI’s Kottayam District Committee office, the body will be brought home to Kottayam. The cremation will be held tomorrow at 11 am in Kottayam Vazhur. Kanath’s son Sandeep, grandson and minister P. Prasad are accompanying the mourning procession.

Thousands paid tribute to him in Thiruvananthapuram. When Kanath’s body was brought to PS Mandir in Patta for public viewing, Governor Arif Muhammad Khan CPI leaders Prakash Babu, Panniyan Ravindran, P. Santosh Kumar MP, PP Suneer, Binoy Viswam, KE Ismail, KP Rajendran and ministers K. Rajan were present. , G.R.Anil, Chinchurani, P.Prasad and Deputy Speaker Chittayam Gopakumar paid tributes to Kanam. Party flag was draped over the dead body. CPM State Secretary MV Govindan, KK Shailaja, PK Srimati, M Vijayakumar and LDF Convenor EP Jayarajan paid tributes.

Kanam Rajendran’s demise postponed Saturday’s New Kerala audience. New Kerala seats in Tripunithura, Thrikakkara, Piravam and Kunnathunad have been postponed. The tour will continue from Perumbavoor at 2 pm on Sunday afternoon.

Kanam Rajendran, who was staying at Amrita Hospital after having his right leg amputated below the knee due to diabetes, passed away yesterday at half past five. He was initially admitted to the ICU after suffering a mild heart attack yesterday afternoon. A massive heart attack followed. He was the state secretary of the CPI since 2015 and was on leave for three months due to health reasons. When MN Govindan Nair and C. Achuthamenon were in the leadership of the CPI, Kanam joined the party state secretariat in 1982 at the age of 32 and was elected MLA from Vazhur in 1987. After that he competed 3 times but could not win.

The CPI has come to the fore through the ups and downs of the hierarchy. After PK Vasudevan Nair, Kanam, who is the state secretary of CPI from Kottayam district, reached that position in 2015 in the state conference held in Kottayam itself. Later he became secretary in Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram state conferences.

Kanam’s demise came at a stage when Kanam had achieved complete dominance as secretary by taming the opposition voices. He is also a member of the CPI Central Secretariat. He was the state president and general secretary of AITUC. He has been a member of the CPI State Council for 53 years. Kanam, who entered the political arena through AISF, became the state secretary of AIYF in 1970. He has also worked as Kottayam district secretary of CPI for 2 times.
