Farewell to Dr. Giampaolo Pinato, pioneer of pain therapy and palliative care

It was he who had brought it to Venice since the beginning of the seventies pain therapy and palliative carefinally giving relief to many cancer patients. Dr. passed away on November 1, 2024 Giampaolo Pinatoa well-known and esteemed doctor active mainly in the Mestre mainland, who has focused a good part of his professional career on pain relief treatments advanced and innovative. I had 82 years old.

Born in 1942 in Cona, he graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1966 from the University of Padua, first specializing in Anesthesia and Resuscitationthen into Gynecology and Obstetrics. His professional career began as an anesthesiologist at the Umberto I Hospital in Mestre where he dedicated himself to pain therapy since 1972. In the same hospital he will then be responsible for the Pain Therapy and Palliative Care Unit from 1994 to 2008. His CV also includes teaching in the 1990s at the School of Pathophysiology and Pain Therapy at the University of Verona. He was signed up since 1967 to the Venetian OMCeO.

The Italian Association for the Study of Pain (AISD) – a professional association dedicated to research on pain and the improvement of care for patients with pain, which includes doctors, dentists, psychologists, nurses, physical therapists… – reminds us as follows on its website: «Una prominent figure of Pain Therapy in Italy. He was the only one in the entire Veneto Region to obtain five hospitalization beds for the treatment of pain. Over the years he has focused his activity above all on advanced and innovative pain relief treatments such as neuromodulatory and neuroinvasive therapies, becoming them one of the pioneers and top Italian experts.”

Dr. Pinato also founded with other colleagues in 2000 theTriveneta Algological Workshopto promote knowledge of pain and its treatment, of which he has remained president to this day. «Doctor Pinato – AISD’s moving memory – was an example of high clinical skills, stubbornness and dedication put at the service of patients with pain”.
