Aizpuriete was born in 1956 in Jurmala. Studied philology and philosophy at the State University of Latvia (1974-1979), as well as at the M. Gorky Literary Institute’s revival seminar in Moscow (1980-1984). Published since 1976. She periodically worked as a poetry consultant in the magazine “Avots”, a contributor to the newspaper “Aspazija”, the magazine “Karogs”, “Vides Vēstis”. The American composer Eriks Fanks has written the symphony for contralto and orchestra “Shis tonight seems damaged” and the mono-opera “Anna Akhmatova” with the poetry of Aizpurietes.

Aizpuriete was a poet, prose writer, poet and translator. 11 collections of her poems and a novel have been published. She has also translated about 40 novels from English, German and Russian, rewritten poems from German, Russian, Ukrainian and English.

Aizpuriete received the Ojārs Vācieš literary prize for the 2013 collection “Turp” and a special award for the 2011 collection “Ledusskapja šūpuļdziezma”. She also won the Poetry Days award for the 2000 poetry collection “On the outskirts of Babel” and other awards. In 2021, she received the Latvian Literature of the Year Award in the “Poetry” category for the collection “Before Moving Out”. Aizpuriete also won the main prize of the International Vilenica Literary Festival.
