Farewell Message from Samir Handanovic: Reflections on 11 Years at Inter Milan

Samir Handanovic greets Inter. The Slovenian goalkeeper, 39 years old today, wrote a post on Instagram: “After 11 years I don’t know if I can describe everything… I’ll try, because I am bitter and sad but at the same time happy to have made a dream come true for so long.
I will miss Inter, the San Siro stadium, the fans and that thrill when the stadium pushes.
They teach you and leave their mark, they explain what passion and courage are and why every day you have to sacrifice yourself to feel certain emotions.
So many battles, challenges won and challenges lost, disappointments and joy. Being yourself matters most to me our world (football I mean) of hypocrites, I tried to be a man before a footballer.
I thank you all. The teammates of so many years in the Nerazzurri, coaches, staff, doctors, physiotherapists, warehouse workers, all the collaborators, presidents and managers of these years who have been so different, who I have lived in such a profound way and with such a strong sense of belonging that can’t imagine it before.
I thank our warehouse corner where lost games were won and those won were celebrated, even if many will never understand…
I want to dedicate a special thanks to the Curva Nord. In addition to the love for these colors, we have in common the direct, practical, honest and coherent way of seeing football which is not that of words and chatter. The attitude. Because I have always had a clear awareness of the difference and the different in me respect that deserves those who pay to judge and comment, even making mistakes, and those who do it, in the various possible ways, get paid.
How proud to have worn this shirt and this band.
I have lived this privilege always giving my best.
I will try to play for a few more years, this is goodbye but I will always remain one of US”.
