“Farándula”: Cuban Play Takes New York Stage with Author Jazz Vilá as Protagonist

New York, Sep 27 (EFE).- The play “Farándula”, the most successful that has been presented in Cuba in the last 30 years, has arrived at the Repertorio Español theater in New York, where for the first time its author and director Jazz Vilá will take the stage to act as the protagonist in the piece, from September 28 to October 1.

“Farándula”, inspired by a personal experience “of betrayal and lies” that Vilá lived and which he brought to the stage in the form of a comedy, sold out 220 performances over five years in Cuba and was also made into a film.

The film of the same name premiered during the Havana Film Festival in New York last May.

“It is a play that connects with people, a comedy of entanglements in essence, and everyone knows someone who has gone through the same thing, a heartbreak for which they feel deceived,” he told EFE about the success of the play. in his country.

“We have all suffered disappointment in love,” he says.

In “Farándula” a talented photographer maintains a secret relationship with an undocumented young man. Moved by his love, the artist organizes an exhibition financed by his best friend, a prestigious doctor who struggles with a strong addiction.

Everything will take an unexpected turn when on opening night a “stranger” becomes the instrument used by destiny to expose a complex plot of sex, trafficking and lies.

Vilá also attributes its success to the fact that it is a “universal” theme, to the fact that it is “adaptable”, that despite the fact that it has “a very strong Cubanness” everyone can understand it and has allowed it to continue to be in force and enjoyed, since it premiered. March 3, 2018 until now.

The plot of “Farándula” will also be inserted in a soap opera that will be made in Cuba.

“Showbiz: Operation Interpol” is the name under which the adaptation of this work was presented in Miami in 2021 and in the city of San Elizario, in El Paso County (Texas) in 2018.

However, its New York debut marks the first time that Vilá, an actor who has also made films, takes the stage to star in the play.

“It is the first time in five years that I am going to play this character, which is also autobiographical. I was asked to do so in many places, even when the film was made” but I did not want to relive what happened, he indicated.

However, he considers that now “the time is right, the city is very favorable. For me, returning to New York is something special from a family and professional point of view.”

Vilá was in New York presenting the musical drama “Candela” this September, at the LaTea theater, where he was performing, when he was invited by Repertorio to bring to its audience “Farándula”, which he wrote after a year of “digesting” what he it had ocurred.

“The result of what happened is hilarious, as well as the fact that what happened, such a sad thing, has become the most viewed work in Cuban theater,” commented the actor and director.

“When I premiered this play I never thought it would end up becoming this product that has marked the history of Cuban theater,” he said.
