The Irish police warn of further disruptions to public order in Dublin. Far-right groups would use a stabbing as a reason to riot and create chaos. The police expect more arrests to follow.
On Friday, 34 people were arrested during a large anti-immigrant protest that went off the rails. “Far-right groups will continue to disrupt the country after a night of arson, rioting and looting in our capital,” warned Police Commissioner Drew Harris.
“What we saw last night was an extraordinary outburst of violence. These are scenes we have not seen for decades. We have to assume that we will see more such protests.”
During the riots, shops were looted, trams and buses were set on fire and several police cars were damaged. Two officers were injured, one seriously. The riots broke out after it became known that the suspect in the stabbing, which injured three children and a caregiver, is a foreign man.
According to Harris, more arrests could follow once the police have reviewed six thousand hours of camera footage. According to Justice Minister Helen McEntee, more arrests will “certainly” follow.
The suspects already arrested appeared in court on Friday. If convicted of attacking police, they could face prison terms of up to 10 years.
