More than 94,000 workers retired last year. That is 30 percent more than in the two years before. In addition, the average age at which people stopped working has risen to 65 years and 6 months. This is evident from figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) on Tuesday.
The fact that more workers retired is partly due to the fact that the age at which people are entitled to an AOW benefit has not been increased in 2020. This is in contrast to the years before, in which the AOW entitlement age was increased by a few months each time. . Last year, workers first received an AOW benefit when they were 66 years and 4 months old.
It is not clear whether the corona crisis also played a role in the increase in the number of pensioners. Statistics Netherlands does not have sufficient data to be able to say anything about this.
Especially people retired in healthcare and government
More employees retired from a year earlier in all industries, except in financial services. The numbers were greatest in healthcare, government services, education and industry. This is mainly because most people over 55 work there as well.
Failure to raise the state pension age also meant that the average retirement age rose last year. As a result of the measure, one and a half times as many over-66s retired last year compared to the year before, pushing up the average age.
The age at which people retire has been increasing structurally since 2006. In that year that average was still 61 years.
