Portuguese singer Misia, one of the exponents of the fanto revival, died over the weekend at the age of 69 and will be cremated in Lisbon on August 7, her record company announced today.
Susana Maria Alfonso de Aguiar, known by her stage name Misia, died on Saturday in a Lisbon hospital after a long illness, her relatives told local media.
Misia had contributed to the renewal of fanto
Along with singers like Mariza, Ana Mura or even Christina Branco, she belonged to a generation of fando singers who had renewed this traditional melancholic song in recent years.
The singer, who came from Porto (north) and released her last album in 2022, had sung in many countries abroad.
“Misia played a key role in the renewal of fando, not hesitating to experiment with new intensities of sound and less conventional approaches”, underlined the Ministry of Culture.
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Souza paid tribute in a statement published on the presidency’s website yesterday, Sunday, to a “passionate” fando singer who made a career “at the crossroads of other musicians”.
