Fans have sold out all the jerseys of Russian hockey player Philadelphia Flyers Ivan Provorov in the official online store of the National Hockey League (NHL) after he refused to wear a sweater with symbols in support of LGBT communities.
In the NHL online store, only women’s jerseys with the surname of the Russian, as well as non-playing jerseys and black sweatshirts with his surname and number, remained on sale. All men’s jerseys in all Provorov sizes were sold out.
The Russian defender of the Philadelphia Flyers refused to take part in a rally in support of the LGBT community at the reel before the match with the Anaheim Ducks. After the match, Philadelphia’s head coach John Tortorella said that Provorov’s absence from the pre-match reel was due to the player’s refusal to wear a sweater with LGBT symbols.
Provorov himself noted that his refusal to wear a sweater in support of LGBT was not intended as an insult to representatives of these communities.
