Lando Norris won the qualification for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. His teammate Oscar Piastri stood next to him in the first row. The second row belonged to Russell and Leclerc, third to Sainz and Hamilton, fourth to Verstappen and Pérez, fifth to Albon and Hülkenberg.
Race
Lando Norris this time kept first place at the start itself, but Piastri and Leclerc got ahead of him in the Variante della Roggia.
Russell had to go through the first corner after the start and also damaged his front wing, dropping behind Verstappen to seventh place.
Piastri was at the head of the race ahead of Leclerc, Norris, Sainz, Hamilton, Verstappen, Russell, Pérez, Albon, and Alonso rounded off the top ten.
Nico Hülkenberg had contacts with the RB riders at the start of the race. In the event of contact with Ricciardo, the Australian was penalized twice, because the mechanic accidentally touched the car while serving the penalty. The Haas driver received a penalty for the collision with Cunoda, for which the race ended.
Magnussen received a penalty for the collision with Gasly. In addition, he also received 2 penalty points and thus has a total of 12, and he will be banned from starting.
On lap 11, Pérez got ahead of Russell, who continued with a damaged front wing. The Mercedes driver headed to the pits.
Norris built after 14 laps. Leclerc responded a lap later, but fell behind Norris, who managed to undercut. Piastri built two laps after his teammate and stayed ahead of him.
The Red Bull drivers started on hard tires, so they built up later when they switched to hard tires again, so it was obvious that they would go for two stops.
Norris made a mistake and Leclerc caught up to him. In addition, he had tire problems, so he pitted for the second time after only 32 laps.
On lap 38, Russell regained Pérez’s lead from the start of the race and got in front of him. Norris gradually overtook Verstappen, who tried to hold him back, but he was unable to do so for a long time. On lap 41, Norris got ahead of him. Verstappen then drove to the mechanics for the second time.
As the laps ticked by, it became clear that the Ferrari drivers would not build a second time and try to hold on to the top two spots. The McLaren drivers were obviously faster on the newer tyres. On the 45th lap, Piastri got ahead of Sainz and Norris three laps later.
Leclerc was 11 seconds ahead at the time. In the first laps, Piastri was passing Leclerc massively, but after that the differences in lap times were not so big. Leclerc eventually crossed the finish line with a lead of more than 2.6 seconds to take his second win of the year.
Both McLaren drivers followed Leclerc. The British team reduced the deficit to Red Bull to just eight points.
Franco Colapinto, who replaced Logan Sargeant, had a good race on his debut. He didn’t score points, but finished only about 14 seconds behind his teammate.

“The balance is a lot harder (than last year) and a lot of the other teams are faster than last year. It’s a completely different world. For us today it’s going to be more damage limitation because you can’t change a car overnight. I think it will be difficult today. In terms of pure speed, we’re not even faster than any car in front of us.”

14:45: Strategy? It will depend a lot on tire life. Friday practices were interrupted by red flags, so teams have less data.
14:41: We have several Italian Grand Prix winners on the grid. Hamilton has won here five times. Verstappen and Alonso have two victories, Leclerc, Gasly and Ricciardo won once here.
14:35: Argentinean pilot Franco Colapinto, who replaced Logan Sargeant, will make his debut today. He starts from 18th position after making a mistake. He would probably be better off otherwise…
The last Argentinian driver to start an F1 race was Gastón Mazzacane in the 2001 San Marino Grand Prix.
14:31: we expect the red bulls to go ahead, even if they face a lot of competition there. Red Bull were somewhat confused yesterday when they were slower in Q2 on used tires than they were in Q3 on new. The Red Bull drivers were also the slowest on the speed trap.
14:28: Verstappen seventh, Pérez eighth. McLaren can close the gap on Red Bull again today and potentially even take the lead in the Constructors’ Cup. If the race went as it started, McLaren would take 43 points and Red Bull 10 points, which means that McLaren would go into the lead with a lead of 3 points. Of course, we must not forget the point for the fastest lap of the race.
14:23: Yes, Sainz’s 30th birthday today. Ferrari had a surprisingly good pace in Zandvoort, but a double is perhaps too much optimism… However, Ferrari could fight for the podium.
14:20: Riders head to the starting grid. The first row will be occupied by McLaren. For a while it looked like the Mercedes drivers would be in second, but George Russell got ahead of them. But Leclerc still “believes”:
“Tyre management will play a big role. We have to do our work on it. We’ve done our homework, so now it’s about the pace of the car,” Leclerc told Sky Sports.
“We will do everything to finish in the first two places. We will try to do something magical together, especially on Carlos’s 30th birthday.”
2.20pm: Green flags… riders take to the track. First up is Kevin Magnussen.
14:13: Back to statistics. Between 2010 and 2019, a driver starting from pole position won 8 out of 10 races. In 2019 it was Charles Leclerc. But since then, the driver starting from the first place in Monza has not won.
And one interesting thing. Two years ago, Max Verstappen won here after starting from 7th place – that is, the same position he is starting from today. But today will be much more difficult…
14:12: Monza is still hot today. Air temperature 33°C, the track is now 53°C!
14:09: Norris turned pole position into a win a week ago, but it’s still true that if Norris starts first, another driver is in the lead at the end of the first lap.
