In a heartwarming display of solidarity, Czech hockey fans have come together to support a woman in need. The woman, who will be celebrating her 60th birthday in September, has been a dedicated fan of the Litvínov hockey team for an impressive 44 years.
Her love for the team began in 1979 when she first laid eyes on Ivan Hlinka, a legend of the North Bohemian hockey stronghold. Since then, she has been following Litvínov’s matches through radio broadcasts, which have helped her develop a decent command of the Czech language. She even had the opportunity to fulfill her lifelong dream of visiting the club she holds dear.
However, her current situation took a turn for the worse. While working on an article for iDNES.cz about this year’s World Championship in Latvia and Finland, where she passionately supported the Czech national team, her friend, former Litvínov club spokesperson Vladimír Novotný, brought attention to her dire circumstances. Living in the remote village of Nikrace, she is on a disability pension due to chronic back pain, receiving only 180 euros per month with no job prospects.
“I have enough for bread, although I have to walk six kilometers to get it. I also need to pay for electricity, phone bills, and medical expenses. How will I afford firewood for the winter?” she tearfully expressed over the phone.
Coming to her aid, the Ropáci on Tour fan club, led by their chairman Jan Ptáček, organized a fundraising campaign and a hockey memorabilia auction. The funds raised will provide her with enough firewood to keep warm for several winters, totaling 32 cubic meters. Overwhelmed with gratitude upon learning about the fans’ contributions, she said, “Finally, I will be able to heat my home not just to prevent freezing, but to feel warmth.”
The Ropáci on Tour fan club shared their progress, stating, ”It required a considerable amount of work, but the first batch of firewood is already stacked in the shed. This winter, she will be comfortable, and heating will not be a problem for this season and beyond.”
Employees of the club also joined the cause, contributing gifts from the team’s fan shop, including a Litvínov jersey with the symbolic number 79 and the name ”Vija” and a plush Verváček, which brought her immense joy. ”You have kind hearts, my friends. Yellow and black forever,” expressed the fan club, extending their gratitude to all who contributed. This heartwarming gesture reaffirms that Litvínov fans are one big family.
As the woman prepares to celebrate her milestone birthday, she can now look forward to a brighter future, thanks to the unwavering support of the Litvínov community.
