Ana Clara Benevida, 23, died on Nov. 17 during Swift’s second song at a show in Rio de Janeiro and died a few hours later at a local hospital. The temperature in the city that day was around 40C (105F).
Fans queued for hours before the show, with many accusing organizers of not supplying enough water to the more than 60,000 people who attended the concert at Nilton Santos Stadium. They said they were not allowed to bring their own water into the stadium.
The report of the Institute of Forensic Medicine states that the fan’s heartbeat and breathing stopped as a result of Benevide’s heat.
The report also said she had no pre-existing conditions or substance abuse that could have caused her death. A forensic pathologist who carried out a post-mortem examination said the heat had caused her to have “severe lung damage and sudden death”.
One of Benevides’ friends, who also attended the concert, told local media in November that they were given water while waiting to enter the stadium. Show organizer T4F said the company “implemented best practice”, complied with “every request from the authorities” and “distributed thousands of bottles of water” to fans.
TF4 also denied that concertgoers were prevented from bringing their own water into the stadium.
TF4 said Benevides was “quickly attended to by members of the rescue team and sent (to the hospital) in an intensive care unit ambulance”. “In our 40 years in the business, this company has never had a tragic episode,” T4F said.
