Famous white cliff in Sicily defaced with red powder

The famous Scala dei Turchi cliff in Sicily has been defaced with a red powder. Red spots can be seen on the normally white cliff.

It is not known who threw the powder on the cliff in the night of 7 to 8 January. It appears to be iron oxide that is also used in the food industry. The police have launched an investigation and are reviewing images from security cameras in the area.

The snow-white cliff attracts thousands of tourists every year. Sicily’s regional president, Nello Musumeci, says vandals are behind the graffiti. He calls their action cowardly and an attack on the beauty of the island.

Local residents are trying to remove the red spots with all their might. They are assisted by experts in the field of natural stone restoration. They say there’s a good chance the cliff will be radiant white again.
