Famous Ukrainian Writer Victoria Amelina Dies in Russian Missile Attack

Kyiv ∙ On the 27th of last month, famous writer Victoria Amelina (37) died after being injured in a Russian missile attack on a restaurant in Ukraine. 10 people were killed in the attack that day. 61 people were injured. Ukrainian authorities later arrested one man for aiding Russia in the attack.

Amelina, who has won literary awards including the European Union Prize, focused on exposing war crimes after the Russian invasion. Amelina was also the one who discovered the diary of Ukrainian writer Volodymyr Vakulenko, who was killed by the Russians. She was writing a book about women collecting the atrocities of war.

The missile attack took place during a busy night at the restaurant in the city of Kramatorsk, which is frequented by journalists and volunteers. Amelina was accompanied by a group of Colombian writers and journalists.

In 2014, Amelina’s first novel, ‘November Syndrome’, was shortlisted for the Valery Shevchuk Award. The novel ‘Dom’s Dream Kingdom’ won the European Union Award in 2017.

Meanwhile, Russia claims it has foiled a Ukrainian plot to kill Russian-backed Crimean leader Sergei Aksyonov with a car bomb.
