Proud parents! Dwyane Wade, Khary Payton and more celebrities have opened up about their LGBTQ children’s journeys.
The professional basketball player revealed in February 2020 how his daughter Zaya came out as transgender, noting that he takes his “roles and responsibilities” as his father “very seriously.”
The athlete said during a Ellen DeGeneres Show appearance at the time her preteen was “born a boy” and “originally named Zion,” but she sat with Wade and his wife, gabrielle unionto share your story.
“[She] He said, ‘Hey, I want to talk to you. I think that in the future, I am ready to live my truth. And I want to be referenced as her and her. I would love to be called Zaya,'” said the a father first the author recalled. “Now it’s our job to go out there and get information, reach out to every relationship we have.”
Wade said that he and the actress then contacted the cast of FX’s Posewho made television history with the largest cast of transgender actors.
The Chicago native explained to Ellen DeGeneres: “We’re just trying to find out as much information as possible to make sure we give our son the best chance to be his best.”
As for Payton, the Living Dead alum introduced her transgender son, Karter, in June of that same year.
“This is my son,” the actor tweeted at the time. “One of the happiest and most balanced people I have ever met. My son, Carter. Karter with a K because he reminded her of my name. He chose it. You see, he was born female but he always identified as a boy.”
The little boy “thought it would be great” for his father to share his identity through social media. “I told him there would be so many fans but also a lot of jerks who would be tough,” the Georgia native explained. “He said, ‘Yeah, I know about trolls, dad. I can handle trolls.’”
