The famous gorilla Bokito passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Diergaarde Blijdorp reports. His health had deteriorated rapidly in recent days.
The 27-year-old gorilla had not been feeling well since last Sunday. On Monday he was observed extra and his manure was examined. The next day his health had still not improved.
That is why the Rotterdam zoo decided to examine him further and to give him fluids. He died while under anesthesia. The cause of death is unknown. This is being investigated further.
In 2007 Bokito became world news when he escaped from the zoo. Over the years, the gorilla has developed into a social family man, Diergaarde Blijdorp reports. He had ten descendants and accepted a foster son. According to the zoo, this is unusual for gorillas.
Bokito was born on March 14, 1996 in Zoo Berlin. In the context of the European breeding program he came to Diergaarde Blijdorp in Rotterdam in 2005.
