The French movie Anatomy of a Fall by director Justine Triet won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday evening. Triet is the third woman ever to win the prestigious film award.
Anatomy of a Fall is about a writer, Sandra Hüller, who is accused of murdering her husband.
The award was handed over by Jane Fonda, who also emphasized how far the film festival had come in terms of the number of women nominated. Seven female directors were nominated this year. Previous women who won the Golden Palm precede Jane Campion The Piano a Julia Ducournau met Titanium.
When receiving the prize, Triet mentioned the protests against the French pension law. Prior to the festival, it was announced that the protests were not allowed to continue in Cannes.
The jury prize, the most important prize after the Golden Palm, went to The Zone of Interest by Jonathan Glazer. The film tells the story of a German commander who was responsible for executing many Jews in Auschwitz extermination camp during World War II.
The Best Actor award went to Kōji Yakusho for his role in Perfect Days. The best actress award went to Merve Dizdar for her role in About Dry Grasses.
