Famous Iranian actress Tarane Alidusti (38, photo), who appeared in the film ‘Leila’s Brothers’, which received rave reviews at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, has been arrested by the authorities. Alidusti supported the anti-government protests sparked by the “mysterious death of the hijab”.
According to the British Guardian newspaper, citing local Iranian media on the 17th, Alidusti was arrested on the same day for posting false information on social media and promoting social confusion. Alidusti’s arrest was notified to the outside world by director Samiya Mirshamsi. Later, it was reported by local media Mizan.
Earlier, Alidusti called for participation in anti-government protests, saying, “Your silence means support for oppression and dictatorship,” on his Instagram account about the execution of anti-government protester Mohsen Shekari (23) on the 8th. He also raised his voice, saying, “It is a shame for humanity if international organizations do not respond to this brutal execution by the Iranian government.”
The Guardian interpreted that by arresting Alidusti, who is considered the most influential actor of the young Iranian generation, the Iranian authorities have revealed their willingness to crack down on actors, artists and other celebrities who threaten the government.
Alidusti is regarded as one of the leading Iranian actresses who played the lead character in the film ‘The Salesman’ directed by Ashgar Farhadi which won the Best Foreign Language Film Award at the 2017 American Academy Film Festival. He has been active in business cinematic until recently, appearing in Saed Rustai’s ‘Leila’s Brothers’ which screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. She is fluent in German and English, she has also translated books.
He said he would not leave Iran despite the crackdown by the authorities. He will stay (in Iran) and I will not stop (resistance).”
