Family’s Day at Water Park Takes a Dangerous Turn: Play Equipment Breaks and Almost Injures Children

On Wednesday, Lars Bergli from Fauske visited the water park at Dyreparken in Kristiansand with his family.

What started as a fun day of slides and playground equipment suddenly took an abrupt turn when one of the devices in the park broke completely.

– It was a thick steel stand of around two metres. It snapped right off, says the father of the family.

According to him, the broken play equipment fell into the water just a few centimeters from where children were playing.

– If it had hit someone in the head, it would have been a serious accident.

He says that lifeguards were quickly present and emptied the pool of people.

A photo he has shared with Dagbladet shows that a sign has been put up warning that the floor may be slippery where the foundation for the play equipment is.

Side by side, there is a similar piece of play equipment to the one that broke – still in use. Bergli reacts to that.

– I think it is terrifying that shortly afterwards they let children onto the second stand, he says and continues:

– Does it have the same material weakness as the one that broke?

The zoo: – Cleaned it up

Marketing and communications director at Dyreparken, Anniken Bjørnstad Schjøtt, confirms that a post on a play device in the water park bent and broke due to stress on Wednesday.

– It is for a pole that holds a climbing net up. The lifeguard was quickly on the scene and emptied the pool of people, she says.

She says that the technical department was quickly out and checked the other device, so that it could remain open.

After the device crashed, a maximum limit of five people has been introduced on what remains. Previously, there was no restriction.

Schjøtt calls the incident unpleasant.

– At the same time, no one was injured and we have been able to clean it up. We don’t want that to happen. It should be fun to be in the water park and it should be a good experience.
