REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — University of Indonesia Epidemiologist Pandu Riono suggested that the approach to vaccination per family could be a strategy to accelerate delivery Covid-19 vaccine in the elderly (elderly) group. “In Indonesia, the elderly are part of the family. It’s different from abroad, who are usually already in nursing homes. So it’s better for (per) family to be vaccinated, so that everyone is vaccinated,” he said, in an online journalist workshop held by the Ministry of Health which was attended in Jakarta. , Friday (25/2/2022).
He said there were many ways that had not yet been attempted to reach the elderly. The approach can also be through retirement organizations to reach them so they want to be vaccinated against Covid-19.
According to Pandu, the reluctance of the elderly to take vaccinations is because there is a view that it is not important for those who are already in their old age to get the Covid-19 vaccine. He said it was necessary to educate them, that productivity in retirement needs to be increased and as a productive elderly, of course, need the vaccine.
Another reason why the elderly have not been vaccinated can also be due to problems with access to health services. In this case, visiting the house or gathering the elderly after mapping their location can be done to speed up vaccination.
Another problem is that Covid-19 vaccination for the elderly is hampered because they are influenced by bad information regarding vaccines. Pandu gave an example of incorrect information, such as saying that those who were vaccinated died quickly.
“If we are scared like that, no one wants to. This is our problem,” he said.
Pandu said such different obstacles should be taken seriously. “We need the help of social scientists, communication experts to be able to solve problems like that,” he said.
