“It is heartwarming to see so many people, from all over the country, come to pay Peter one last tribute. This affects us enormously”, Ikink read.
“Peter thought it was important that everyone to whom he meant something could say goodbye to him. We would like to thank everyone for this gesture and the massive support we have received over the past period.”
Long rows
At 21.10 the last people who wanted to say goodbye went inside. Around 8.30 pm there were still hundreds of people in line who came to pay a final greeting to De Vries. The municipality then announced that the doors would close and that no one could join the queue. The plan was that the public was welcome until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
Three girls from Amsterdam were just allowed through. “We’ve been really lucky. We had been waiting for more than 1.5 hours,” says one of them with relief. “Impressive” they call the goodbye when they come out again. “I was completely silent and emotional. There were so many flowers.”

All day long there has been great interest in De Vries’ farewell. Since 7 a.m., people have gathered to pay their last tribute to the deceased crime journalist. The doors of Carré opened just before 11 a.m. Funeral company Monuta estimated that some 6,000 people had been inside until 8 p.m.
Private funeral
De Vries died last week as a result of the shooting more than a week earlier in Amsterdam. The funeral will be held privately on Thursday.
