Mexico City. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo described the family of the current president of the National Human Rights Commission, Rosario Piedra Ibarra, as “a symbol of struggle in Mexico.”
Given the controversy over the fact that the official was included in the shortlist for the new appointment at the head of the organization for the period 2025-2029, even though she was not initially considered, the federal president asserted that it is an issue that will be resolved by the Senate of the Republic.
“It is a decision of the Senate, I raised it yesterday, the senators make the shortlist, based on their committees, and the plenary session decides based on the shortlist. Rosario (Piedra) Ibarra is, with her mother (Rosario Ibarra), her family, a symbol in Mexico of the fight against repression, authoritarianism, and forced disappearances from the State,” said the head of the Executive.
He insisted that the senators must make the decision among the shortlist that has already been released, in which in addition to Piedra Ibarra, who chaired the CNDH in the last five years, there is Nashielli Hernández, who was head of the Human Rights Commission. Humans of Mexico City; and Paulina Hernández Diz, former executive secretary of the Jalisciense Women’s Institute.
“The Senate made the decision to include her (Piedra Ibarra) in the shortlist with two other women, and they are going to decide who is the best profile to occupy the CNDH,” Sheinbaum concluded.
