Family of Four Dies in Catastrophic Hurricane in Derna, Eastern Libya

According to a Sky News Arabia correspondent, the family consisting of the father, Saleh Sariya, his wife, Sanaa El-Gammal, and their two daughters, Walaa and Hoda, died as a result of the catastrophic hurricane in Derna, eastern Libya.

Muhammad Sariya, brother of the late head of the family, told Sky News Arabia that his brother worked as an engineer in Derna for about 30 years, and lived there with his wife and their two daughters, who worked in the field of teaching and computer engineering.

Muhammad confirmed that “the family of 4 people died by drowning in Derna.”

He added: “My brother’s house was in a one-story building next to one of the largest dams in Derna. The house sank while they were inside it at dawn.”

Muhammad continued: “Since the hurricane began, we have tried to communicate with him to no avail. We contacted one of the people of Ain al-Hilweh camp who lives in Derna, and he assured us that he saw their bodies and worked to bury them there.”

Sariyah pointed out that “dozens of families from the Ain al-Hilweh camp in Lebanon reside in Derna, and their relatives are still trying to contact them to inquire about their conditions.”

He concluded his speech by saying: “Given the difficult circumstances we are living in in Ain al-Hilweh camp, we decided to accept condolences to the family through social media platforms.”

Until now, there is still little information about the presence of Lebanese or residents of Lebanese territory among the victims of Storm “Daniel” that struck Libya, awaiting the end of the complex relief work there.

Earlier on Wednesday, the mayor of Derna, Abdel Moneim Al-Ghaithi, confirmed to Sky News Arabia that the death toll in Derna as a result of the disaster may exceed 20,000.
