Family of Deceased Bulgarian Singer Demands Justice for Driver Responsible for Fatal Crash

Against the background of the new national protest against road killings, another court decision surfaced, which caused the anger of a blackened family from Plovdiv. The mother of singer Nikolay Nikolov, known in music circles as Niko, who died in an accident, published an emotional post on social networks that caused a wave of reactions.

Five years ago, two young musicians died in a collision with a Turkish truck. The driver, who was driving the truck, is free with a suspended sentence, revealed the mother, Marijana Nikolova. She also writes: “For 5 years, we looked at postponement, downward spiraling, false expertise and high cynicism. I claim it not as a grieving mother, but according to the will of the orist in my capacity as a direct victim and an eyewitness of the Bulgarian perverted justice practices”, writes the mother.

After 5 years of hiding from Bulgarian justice, the driver was arrested in February this year upon entering the territory of Bulgaria. Last week, the district court in Stara Zagora released him.

“This verdict is unfair and humiliating for us,” said father Tsvetan Nikolov. “This is the true face of the judicial system – disregard for the interests of the injured,” the man believes.

According to him, the driver of the bus is not wanted because the first auto technical examination reports that he is not at fault.

“When we asked for a triple examination, the experts showed that he had exceeded the speed limit by 25 km per hour on top. He is a professional driver who regularly does this course, driving a 22 meter long bus loaded with 10 cars. The court considered that this was due to imprudence and things began to look for the smallest punishment”, explained Tsvetan Nikolov.

According to the family’s information, the man has entered and left Bulgaria 50 times since the accident until his arrest.

And a week after the accident, the truck was returned to Turkey at the request of the owners. “For me and most lawyers, it is inadmissible because the auto technical examination was not done. It was taken from photographs,” explained the father of the deceased driver.

In the grounds of the court in Stara Zagora, it is said that both drivers are to blame for the accident and exceeded the speed limit twice over. The Turkish driver admitted his guilt, requested that the case be conducted according to the abbreviated procedure, and thus, according to the law, he received 1/3 lower punishment than provided by law. The court also took into account his clean criminal record.

The family will appeal to the Court of Appeal in Plovdiv and will demand an effective punishment.
