The family of an unarmed black man who was shot by a cop in the American city of Columbus, will be paid $ 10 million. The city council approved the amount on Friday, the highest sum of money the capital of the state of Ohio has ever paid in a settlement case.
In a statement, the board said no amount of money will ever return Hill to his family, “but we believe this is an important and necessary step in the right direction.” The board has also decided to name a sports hall after Hill.
The victim’s family says they are satisfied with the settlement. In a response, they thank the municipality for the “right decision”.
Not a firearm, but a cell phone
Andre Hill, 47, was shot by officer Adam Coy in a house garage in December. Bodycam footage shows Hill walking out of the garage with a phone in hand, after which Coy shoots him. The victim turned out not to be carrying a weapon.
Coy was turned down in February charged with murder. In the indictment, the policeman is also accused of not having turned on his bodycam. The officer only turned on his camera after shooting, but the images were recorded anyway because the camera automatically saves the previous 60 seconds.
The footage also shows Hill lying on the ground for minutes without any of the officers providing medical assistance. Coy was already fired by the police at the end of December.
