The ground floor of Linda and André’s house has been a wreck for 23 years. Linda is forced to cook on a camping gas stove in the shed and their daughter knows no better than to live among her father’s building materials. In fact, she was born in the barn.
After Linda’s sister rang the bell ten years ago at Help my husband is a handyman, she now tries again. Because the situation can’t go on like this, she thinks. And John agrees. He decides to surprise the couple at home.

And luckily, they are behind it. Linda is especially happy that they come to help. “I’m tired of it, of course. The worst thing is always going up and down the stairs and into the barn to cook. Through all kinds of weather.” John is visibly saddened by the situation, especially when Linda casually mentions that they also lived in the barn for two years. “Martine was born here. We couldn’t live there until the top floor was finished.”
The handymen arrive and André helps with full courage. So good, that the handymen even start to mistrust it. After all, he has wanted to do nothing for more than twenty years. “Is he kidding us or something?” they wonder aloud now that after so many years of absence he is suddenly full of odd jobs.

John also finds it striking and decides to throw his feeling on the table. Time for a good conversation. “I think you need to step out of a dream for a moment. A dream of a house. You let me, put briefly, come for a stove. While the house is just rotting.” The couple defends themselves by saying that it has become a habit. They are used to living in a ruin and have more or less settled for it.
John says he wants to protect them from that in the future. “It just took 20 years of your lives,” he says. “Couldn’t this have happened sooner?” André agrees. “Of course things happen that I think: I would have done that differently. But now I just want it done.”

To maximize the surprise for Linda, the team decides to send her away for a few nights. Much to her sorrow. “I’d rather hand André the screws, help him,” she says. She visibly struggles with the situation, but that is all forgotten as soon as she enters her completely renovated – and above all: habitable – home a few days later. “Oh my gosh,” she says with tears in her eyes. Finally, cooking in the barn is taboo.
Help my husband is a handyman can be seen every Monday at 8.30 pm on RTL 4. Tonight’s episode can be seen on RTL XL or Videoland.
