The funeral of the director of the National Civil Police, Commissioner Mauricio Arriaza Chicas, is taking place this afternoon at the Jardines del Recuerdo cemetery in San Salvador; family, friends and officials bid farewell to the police officer who reached the pinnacle of his career when he was named general commissioner.
Mauricio Arriaza Chicas was a founding member of the police corporation, he stood out not only for being the ONI #1, but also for being the first and only general commissioner of the PNC, a title that was conferred on him by the unconstitutional president, Nayib Bukele, in May 2023, in recognition “of his significant achievements in the fight against gangs.”
Arriaza Chicas was head of the institution since June 1, 2019 and was in charge of the security strategies implemented by the central government in terms of security, such as the Territorial Control Plan and the state of emergency.
Dozens of people, family members and colleagues from the police force attended the ceremony where the commissioner’s remains were buried. On Tuesday night, Bukele himself stood guard of honor at the former Presidential House, where hundreds of Salvadorans paid tribute to him.
