Family Enjoys Active Summer Holidays with Packraft Adventures

Tommy Lybekk from Lørenskog uses his summer holidays actively, and often takes his family on paddling trips using his “packraft”.

– We are enjoying ourselves, it is a very nice way to experience nature, says the 43-year-old to Dagbladet.

Gray start

On Tuesday, the trip went down the Akerselva in the capital. The hiking experience started with 15 minutes of rain, which we in Eastern Norway are no stranger to this summer.

– We sat under a bridge and waited until it got light, he says optimistically.

A little rain doesn’t stop Lybekk, and when a shower comes he says that it’s just a matter of pulling in.

– It is not pleasant on the fjord in bad weather, but it is no more difficult than going in if the rain comes, he says.

He describes the conditions down Akerselva as perfectly fine.

– It’s a completely new way of seeing Oslo. Rafting goes a little by itself, you just have to steer clear of rocks and scooters, he says with a laugh.

– A hectare

Lybekk bought its first packraft in 2017.

– Since then I have been hooked, he points out.

Marius Monrad, who is a shop assistant at the “Paddle specialist”, tells Dagbladet that packraft is very popular.

– There are still people who buy packraft. It has long been an increasing trend, which has remained stable, says Monrad.

He points out that packraft is a good means of transportation that saves energy on long trips, and is easy to take with you on short trips.

Lybekk tells Dagbladet that it’s a great way to get to islands where people don’t usually travel, and that it’s a low-threshold activity that doesn’t require a lot of planning.

– We have gone on several overnight trips, it seems that the children love it, says the father of small children.

Lybekk points out that the good weather was at its best before he went into the summer holidays.

He is now in his second week of holiday, and it is fair to point out that he has not exactly been lucky with the weather forecast.

– Sad summer ahead

When even the meteorologist says that it is permissible to complain about the summer temperatures, it is a sad summer ahead of us.

– The next two weeks will continue to be colder than normal, especially in the south, says on-duty meteorologist Eldbjørg Moxnes to Dagbladet.

A low pressure has anchored, and will affect us for some time to come, she says.

– It won’t be bad weather this week either. The only positive thing I can announce is a high pressure outside Svalbard. So it is the north that are the weather winners, says Moxnes.

Forecasts torrential rain

– Haven’t seen for a long time

The meteorologist points out that the forecasts are so uncertain that it is currently difficult to trust short-term forecasts.

– There have been bad and uncertain warnings in the past. We know people want to plan long-term, but it is difficult to trust the notifications we see at the moment, she says.

According to the meteorologist, next week will also possibly offer low-pressure weather.

– The positive thing is that the weather is very calm. There are currently no danger warnings, which we have not seen for a long time, says Moxnes.

– Hopefully there will be better news to report in August, she adds.
