Family Demands Refund After Dangerous Conditions at Funplays Playground

Norwegian summer often offers nice sunny days, but we Norwegians all know the rainy days when you have to replace your sunglasses with an umbrella.

The Solbakken Jørgensen family from Ski recently had to do that during their motorhome holiday. The family of four, Jørgensen, the roommate and the children aged three and five, were in Skien when the sky suddenly opened.

– Don’t touch anything!

– Torn up

They decided to spend the day inside the playland Funplays, formerly the Adventure Factory, for fun and games. But the fun didn’t last long, because the mother of young children quickly began to fear for the children’s safety, she says.

– It didn’t take long before we started to react. I was surprised at first that it was completely dark and that the foam rubber on the stairs was completely torn up, Jørgensen tells Dagbladet.

Telemark newspaper mentioned the matter first.

– Takes all the blame

The mother of young children describes a playground in poor condition, including holes in safety nets, missing springs on trampolines and hard surfaces.

– The safety nets on the third floor have been stripped where there are holes, there are large holes in the trampolines and you can see that it is tearing in several places, says Jørgensen.

She took pictures of much of what she thought was objectionable, while she moved around the playground with the children.

– It only got worse and worse the further in we got.

The general manager at Funplays in Skien, Marian-Ionut Rotaru, says that Funplays takes “all the blame” and that all problems must be fixed within two months.

– I was there yesterday and we have blocked off some of the areas now. We have ordered parts, but the delivery time is long. We don’t want it that way, but there was a lack of materials. We don’t want people to feel unsafe with us, says Rotaru.

Voi Sabotage: – Really nasty

Dread accident

Part of one of the play areas was closed, and Jørgensen says that she thought it was strange and looked in.

– The toy bridge had a big hole. I hope it wasn’t an accident, she says.

A children’s ticket for children aged between 1 and 17 costs NOK 229 in high season, according to the Funplays website. Adults pay NOK 39 for entry. In total, the family paid NOK 566.

The day-to-day manager denies that there has been an accident at the playground.

Recalled: – Several children injured

Demanded money back

The five-year-old jumped on a trampoline when the family saw that the fabric had been stretched far, Jørgensen describes. She says it looked like it was about to burst. When they lifted the cushions that protect the springs of the trampoline, they also saw that many parts were missing, claims Jørgensen.

– We open the cushion and between seven and nine springs are missing in a row. If the five-year-old had stepped there, she would have gone through. It is life-threatening, says Jørgensen.

It was the final straw for the family. Jørgensen says that she felt compelled to ask for the money back.

– We didn’t dare to be there anymore. I demanded that the trampoline be closed, but the employees said they couldn’t do it without the general manager, who wasn’t present, says Jørgensen.

Received several complaints

The general manager, Marian-Ionut Rotaru, says that they have received several complaints about the standard of the playground. He says they have ordered parts to fix the problems.

– If I had the opportunity to fix it myself, I would have done it. There are delivery problems, we haven’t had the materials, he says.

– The trampolines are now blocked, the tunnel is double-checked and blocked further so that no one can get in.

He assures that the closed tunnel is not closed as a result of an accident, as Jørgensen feared.

– The net was broken, it could not be used, says Rotaru.

Huge discovery is causing a stir

Stays open

The playland remains open, and Rotaru says many still enjoy the playland.

– People only take pictures of the bad things, there is nothing to do about it. We take the blame and we will fix it.

The lights where Jørgensen thought it was dark must also be fixed.

– We will do our best to fix it as soon as possible.

The family got the full amount back and both parents sent an e-mail to the playland with pictures of what they thought was objectionable. Jørgensen says that she has not received any reply or feedback.

– I will not go back there. We have good experience with Funplays in Ski, so I hope this will come to light and that there will be an improvement, says Jørgensen.
