On Sunday, July 16th, 10 families who are being accompanied by the outpatient children’s and youth hospice service of the Malteser Hilfsdienst eV met for a family day in Freiburg. The family day was planned by the coordinators of the services and carried out with the support of the voluntary family companions and a student. The Malteser received financial support from funds from the Hoerco Foundation.
In bright sunshine, the parents had the opportunity to get to know each other and exchange ideas over coffee and cake. A total of 16 children took part in an exciting children’s program throughout the day, which was created and guided by a student (social work) together with a volunteer (adventure teacher). In small groups, the children were allowed to explore the site together with their family companions and solve various tasks. The children had a lot of fun with the different tasks such as guessing scents, building a tower out of natural materials, sound memory, getting to know the animals, etc. The child, who is in a wheelchair due to his illness, was also able to take part in the children’s program with the support of the family companion. The winning group received a certificate and all children were delighted with a wooden medal.
Afterwards, everyone had a lunch break together. After lunch the children could paint stones, listen to a story, play football or watch and pet the animals (horses, chickens, goats) with their parents. The kids loved the place with so much to see and explore.
In the afternoon everyone could enjoy delicious muffins and lemon cake and the eventful day ended together. The children went home happily and the parents had really enjoyed the time spent exchanging ideas together.
