Over the course of just over a year, Rodny Kaastad (84) has been cared for by at least 61 different employees.

He is admitted to Ellingsrudhjemmet in Oslo. His family is distraught and does not dare to leave him alone in the nursing home.

They say that there have been many mistakes and that they do not trust that he is followed up well enough.

Rodny’s story has caused several people to react, and was among the topics in the party leader debate on NRK.

– Several hundred messages

Rodny’s family is happy that the case has received a lot of attention.

– It has been a few strange days, says daughter Anita Cathrine Øiehaug of the time after VG wrote about the father.

VG meets her, his wife Randi Øiehaug Kaastad and granddaughter Marthe Maria Øiehaug Aronsen outside Oslo City Hall.

On Thursday, the father’s story was among the topics during the city council’s meeting of the Health and Social Affairs Committee.

– I have received several hundred messages from people who say that they are in the same situation, says Anita.

The family does not feel that the situation for Rodny has improved after the case was published in VG, and wants the municipality to take action.

– We want to know what they have to do to make it better for dad, the other residents and those who work there, says Anita.

Among other things, the family wants better basic staffing in nursing homes, and that those who will care for the elderly can get to know the residents and their needs better.

Demands that the city council take action

Høyre, Venstre, Frp and KrF have asked the city council to give an account of care for the elderly in Oslo.

During the meeting, health councilor Marthe Scharning Lund (Ap) had to answer.

When asked by committee member Hassan Nawaz (H) whether the city council would like to apologize to the family on behalf of the municipality, the city council replied as follows:

– I have read the case and I am of course sorry that the family does not feel that he has received good enough treatment. I am touched by Rodny’s story and hope we can achieve better cooperation at the nursing home and that we can provide all our residents with a satisfactory offer, says Scharning Lund.

She says that she became aware of the case about Rodny when VG contacted her.

The health authority says she has been in contact with the nursing home agency and the nursing home, which states that they have followed up Rodny.

The nursing home has offered him to change departments or to change nursing homes, she says.
