A group calling itself ‘the citizens of the Netherlands’ had started an online petition earlier today. Schouten told Humberto that he has already pointed out the initiative to Mayor Femke Halsema of Amsterdam. “I think it’s good if we remember how someone like that fought for all of us.”
Zeeheldenstraat name out
Brother Wouter said he thought it was ‘a nice plan’. “I would like to call on Halsema: throw out a naval hero and come up with a Peter R. de Vries street name.” If it’s up to him, Peter’s kids Royce and Kelly get to pick the spot.
He indicated that he was not interested in a statue or monument for his brother, but for ‘Peter R. de Vries.’

The chance that it will come to that soon does not seem very high. The rules for street names dictate that a street cannot be named after a person shortly after his death.

Wouter de Vries further called it ‘a scandal that parents of a murdered child must have one last straw that Peter was. A scandal in a rich country like the Netherlands’.
He was referring to the fact that De Vries often managed to solve murder cases where the appropriate authorities had failed, thanks to his tenacity.

But there was also a downside: “Peter has been praised for all his actions and his principles over the past two weeks. I would like to point out that those principles, even though we support them as a family deep in our hearts, also cause a lot of grief, because Royce and Kelly have lost their father.”
