Families of El Paso shooting victims will receive $5 million

A white man convicted of a racist shooting against Hispanics at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, in 2019, agreed to pay $5 million in compensation to the victims and their families.

Patrick Crusius, 24, was sentenced to 90 consecutive life sentences for the attack, which left 23 people dead and 22 injured.

The shooting occurred on August 3, 2019, at a Walmart in the border city of El Paso. Many Mexican citizens usually go to that place to buy.

Crusius, who pleaded guilty to 90 federal counts of murder and hate crimes, confessed to publishing a manifesto. This contained anti-immigrant and white nationalist proclamations. He also acknowledged that his attack was directed against Mexicans.

Judge David Guaderrama of the federal court for the Western District of Texas approved the compensation agreement on Monday.

The compensation will be divided among the families of the victims, and will be used to cover medical, funeral and rehabilitation expenses.

Texas prosecutors plan to put him on trial again for the same shooting in a state trial in which they will seek the death penalty.
