Familiar Riots: A Comparison of Hong Kong and France Unrest

Everything is so familiar.

Seeing the riots in France on newsreels these days, I believe that most Hong Kong citizens have the same feeling: the pain is so severe that they finally know the pain!

Last Tuesday, a 17-year-old African-American boy was shot dead at close range while driving away from the police in the suburbs of Paris, France, triggering social riots in the name of racial conflicts. The riots have continued since last Tuesday. Incidents of vandalism, looting and burning occurred in many cities from Paris to Marseille. Not only buildings, shops, and cars were set on fire, but also city halls, schools, and police stations were set on fire.

A mayor’s mansion was hit by a burning car, and the mayor’s wife was also injured by mobs when she fled with two children aged five and seven.

In Marseille, a group of young people broke into a gun shop and took at least four shotguns. The mayor of Marseille called on the government to send additional troops immediately.

A tourist bus carrying 41 Chinese tourists was stoned by more than a dozen masked men in black, and many tourists were injured.

There are also many videos circulated on the Internet, such as a large group of teenagers smashing windows into the store, setting fire to cars and burning trash cans; there are masked men rushing towards bank ATMs with weapons, and others applaud and cheer; The elder knelt in front of the military police, begging for mercy for the mob…

Everything is so familiar, even exactly the same. If you mix the images of the 2019 black storm in Hong Kong into it, I believe no one will see the difference.

The only difference is the reports and descriptions of the French riots by the media around the world, including Hong Kong.

Today, everyone calls it riots, riots, and all participants are called thugs; however, the same scene and the same behavior happened in Hong Kong in 2019, and the whole world calls it a “social incident”, and everyone calls those thugs Be a “resistor” until today.

In the six days of riots, about 3,300 cars were set on fire in France, more than 500 policemen and firefighters were injured, more than 700 buildings were damaged, 250 banks, 200 food stores and 10 shopping centers were robbed. The famous shops on both sides of the Champs Elysees Avenue, a famous scenic spot, are all enclosed by iron gates or wooden boards to avoid damage.

In addition to deploying 45,000 police officers, the French police also dispatched special forces, armored vehicles, and helicopters to quell the chaos. So far, about 2,800 people have been arrested, with an average age of 17, and 30% of them are minors. One of the arsonists is only a 13-year-old child.

Hong Kong has also experienced these scenes. We also have a 13-year-old reporter. Our “record” is even better, because 40% of those arrested are students. But at that time, the whole world was condemning the “police brutality” in Hong Kong, and even demanded the release and amnesty of the arrested children.

In contrast to France, after a large number of minors were arrested, the Minister of Justice warned parents to be responsible for the behavior of their children, because the parents of minor rioters would have been sentenced to 2 years in prison and a fine of 30,000 euros in France.

The French national football team also made a rare statement on social issues. The captain of the African-American national team and the famous star McBaby appealed on social networking sites: Violence must stop, mourning, dialogue and reconstruction.

On the contrary, our star directors and sports idols in Hong Kong are quite different. They keep posting on social platforms in support of riots, fanning the flames, and pushing young people onto a sinful path of no return.

I saw a video of an elderly man helplessly asking a young man on the street in France, “Why are you doing this?” The mob ignored the old man and continued to beat, smash, loot and burn.

I suddenly feel that the riots in France are milder than the riots in Hong Kong in 2019! At least the meddlesome old man was not beaten to death by the ditch cover, or beaten unconscious.

The French riots were classified as riots on the first day, and the participants were regarded as rioters on the first day. What about us, who are more serious than France? It has been 4 years, and today, social incidents and protesters are still written into the history books, which is really ridiculous.
