Its support for Palestine is a nuisance

What really distinguishes Sarandon is that she is famous for her political activity in addition to her artistic activity and various roles, and she has always challenged stereotypes in her professional and personal life. She began her life as a model for the international Ford agency, but that is not mentioned at all today.

Susan Sarandon says her political position and walks away, not caring about everything that might entail, and not caring about what it means to be non-supportive of Israel – and its project – in a country where the Zionist lobby is concentrated in the highest decision-making positions, especially in the Hollywood film industry, which exposes it to great losses. .

The American actress does not care about professional losses, to the point that she challenges Hollywood with all its might in exchange for expressing her free opinion, and this has cost her greatly, especially in recent days.

The famous American talent agency UTA has canceled its contract with Sarandon, which has managed its business since 2014, due to its continued support for the Palestinian cause during the genocidal war that Israel has been waging against Gaza since October 7, 2023.

“The talent agency no longer represents Sarandon,” a UTA spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday.

This decision to cancel the contract comes after the American actress participated in a demonstration in support of Palestine that was held in Union Square in New York City on November 18, during which Sarandon directed her words to American Jews who fear the escalation of anti-Semitism.

She told the crowd: “Many people are afraid of being Jews at this time. They are tasting what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country, which often means being exposed to violence.”

The 77-year-old actress had previously faced calls for exclusion from Hollywood, after she participated in the demonstration in Washington, DC, on Sunday, November 5, 2023, in the #March4Palestine protest, during which she wore the Palestinian keffiyeh.

Since October 7, 2023, in addition to her activity on the ground, Susan Sarandon – who defines herself on the Official website to publish what Israel is committing against the people of Gaza.

She reposted a tweet that said: “A ceasefire is not enough. Do not turn your back on ethnic cleansing. Do you need dead children to speak?! Raise your voices for the liberation of Palestine and demand an end to the brutal occupation funded by the United States and the lifting of the siege on Gaza.”

She does not hesitate for a moment to declare her full solidarity with the Palestinians, recalling their permanent right to liberate their land. She also does not hesitate to refute the false “facts” about the permanent conflict between Palestine and the occupation, even if that forces her to respond to her colleagues and the American media in order to discredit their narrative.

During the events in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in 2021, Sarandon committed to defending Palestine and the right of its people to their land, and perhaps her most famous tweet spread at the time when she wrote: “These are not clashes, this is a highly armed military force killing civilians to steal their homes. This is occupation and colonialism.”

She was not satisfied with that, but followed it with a group of tweets, one of which stated: “I stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people who are facing ethnic cleansing and intimidation at the hands of the Israeli government and Jewish settler organizations. The world is watching.”

At the end of the year 2021, she returned and condemned the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land through a tweet that she published in conjunction with “Indigenous Peoples Day” in the United States of America. It was an image comparing the area of land seized by settlers in Palestine between the years 1918 and 2021, and another in the United States that was seized. of its indigenous population between 1492 and 2021; In a clear analogy between the indigenous people and the Palestinians.

Against her country’s policies

Away from Palestine, Susan Sarandon has other political positions against her country’s policies, perhaps the most famous of which is her rejection of the Bush government’s invasion of Iraq in 2003. As is the case today, she raised her voice loudly and participated in the major demonstrations against the war in Iraq.

In 2006, she was one of the most prominent celebrities who joined activist Cindy Sheehan in her fast against the invasion of Iraq, which earned her the Humanitarian Action Against Hunger Award in the same year.

In 1993, while hosting the Academy Awards alongside Tim Robbins, the couple spoke about the plight of Haitian refugees infected with HIV. In 1999, she became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and was active in supporting various political and human rights issues.

In 2016, Sarandon was an outspoken supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, before casting her ballot for Jill Stein of the Green Party.

In 2017, she was widely attacked for not supporting Hillary Clinton, even though she had supported her candidacy for the Senate in 2001, but Sarandon believes that Clinton’s support for the war in Iraq was the decisive factor in her changed position.

In a long interview with The Guardian, in which she talked about Hollywood and politics, Susan Sarandon was asked if she really said that Hillary was more dangerous than Trump, and she replied: “Not exactly, but I don’t mind that quote. I think she was very dangerous, but we are at war if She won the presidency.”

She also criticized Obama, adding: “It seems ridiculous to say that health care, child protection, and taxation of the non-rich would not be better now under President Clinton, before we reach the threat of deportation that hangs over millions of immigrants. She would have done it the way Obama did, that is, “Invisibly.” -Arabi Post
