The Senhora da Oliveira Hospital, in Guimarães, currently has ten patients with covid-19 admitted to intensive care. With the installed capacity, at this point, there are two vacant beds in intensive care for covid patients.
The Multipurpose Intensive Care Unit, for covid patients at Hospital de Guimarães had a maximum capacity of six beds. This capacity was extended to twelve beds with the recent adaptation of two operating room rooms for this purpose. With three more beds in each of these rooms, the hospital was able to receive twelve patients infected with covid-19 in need of intensive care.
These expanded capacity, however, is almost exhausted, with only two free beds remaining. The Hospital is now considering adapting, in the coming days, another operating room to receive three more covid-19 patients in intensive care. At that time the hospital will have a total capacity of 15 covid patients in intensive care. This use of the operating room rooms was only made possible due to the possibility, opened by the Government, for hospitals to interrupt all non-urgent activities, namely scheduled surgeries.
The Intensive Care Unit, not covid, continues to operate at this time, with patients with other clinical conditions who come to the hospital daily. This unit has six beds, two of which are occupied. The hospital does not plan, at this stage, to increase the capacity in this unit.
The Guimarães Hospital was forced to transfer some patients, between the end of September and the beginning of October, but with the current capacity and with some availability to increase capacity, this option is not being taken.
