Famalicão home evacuated on Sunday has 32 infected

The Famalicão home that was evacuated on Sunday due to the covid-19 registers a total of 32 infected, including users and employees, this Thursday, the mayor revealed to Lusa.

Paulo Cunha demands a “quick and rigorous” investigation, to investigate everything that has happened and to undermine any responsibilities.

According to the mayor, 22 of the infected are users, 18 of whom are at the Military Hospital of Porto, three in other hospitals and the other at home.

The remaining ten infected are home employees, called Residência Pratinha.

According to Paulo Cunha, the “first news” of the possible existence of covid-19 in the home appeared on March 16, with the first hospitalization being registered two days later.

The chamber, he added, was not informed of the situation until five days later.

“It is deeply regrettable that, with such a serious situation occurring in the municipality, the chamber was only informed five years later,” said Paulo Cunha.

The mayor wants to know what was done in that period to try to stop the chain of contagion, namely if the home and the Health and Social Security entities have complied with all the rules stipulated for these cases.

“I don’t know what happened, but I know that it is very important that everything is checked, in detail”, he underlined.

On Sunday night, 31 users of the Pratinha Residence were transferred to the Military Hospital of Porto, after the home was left without employees because of the covid-19.

The transfer was the solution found after the 18 employees who work at the home were “either tested positive for coronavirus or quarantined”.

The new coronavirus, responsible for the covid-19 pandemic, has already infected an additional 480,000 people worldwide, of whom nearly 22,000 died.

After appearing in China in December, the outbreak spread worldwide, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a pandemic situation.

In Portugal, there were 60 deaths, 17 more than the day before (+ 39.5%), and 3,544 infections confirmed, according to the balance made this Thursday by the Directorate-General for Health, which identified 549 new cases compared to Wednesday (+ 18.3%).

Of those infected, 191 are hospitalized, 61 of whom are in intensive care units, and there are 43 patients who have recovered.
