False Video Circulates Claiming Niger’s Finance Minister Cries After Coup

Days after the military coup in Niger, a video appeared on social media, whose publishers claimed that it shows the country’s finance minister crying after he was given “a deadline to explain the circumstances of the deteriorating financial situation.”

However, the video has nothing to do with recent developments, and it was published in 2021 as the crying of the former Minister of Justice in Niger, Maru Amadou, according to the fact-finding service of the French Press Agency.

The video depicts a man sitting on a podium behind a microphone, sobbing and wiping away his tears.

The publishers of the video commented, “After the coup in Niger, the Minister of Finance was given 48 hours to explain where the missing money went in the country or he would face execution by firing squad.”

The video garnered thousands of interactions on social media, and its spread came days after the military announced, on Wednesday evening, the overthrow of the regime of elected Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, in a statement on national television in Niamey, in the name of the “National Council for the Protection of the Nation.”

The history of Niger, the former French colony rich in uranium, has been replete with coups since its independence in 1960. The region also knows a state of instability, as Niger is the third country to witness a coup since 2020, after Mali and Burkina Faso.

However, the video has nothing to do with the recent developments in Niger.

During the research, the video was published in December 2021 on Nigerian Facebook pages, accompanied by comments that it was the Nigerian Minister of Justice, Mauro Amado, crying.

The mere publication of this video about two years ago denies that it is related to the coup and its consequences.
