False start for rugby in Caen: the Covid-19 also brings Stade Caennais to a standstill

After’Ovalie Caennaise, the Caennais stadium ! On the same day, a few hours apart, the two clubs of rugby of Caen have announced that they will have to postpone their first league game. If their sisters in the Ovalie have “only” been in contact with people with Covid-19, the SCRC learned on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 that one of its players – asymptomatic – had tested positive. However, he took part in the friendly match against Fougères on Saturday, September 5, 2020.

Two games canceled

The Caennais were to start on Sunday, September 13, 2020 against Dieppe at the end of a preparation considered very encouraging. The match counting for the first day of Federal 3 is therefore postponed to a later date. Same fate for the reserve match scheduled for the curtain-raiser.

All players tested

Evolving at an amateur level, the Stade Caennais has no imperative from the French Rugby Federation in terms of screening. “Only the pros are tested regularly,” recalls Hugues Roussel, the club’s physical trainer.

After the announcement of this first case, the club however asked all of its senior staff to undergo screening. “If all the tests are negative, we will resume training. For the time being, and as a precaution, the sessions are suspended.

All the lights were green before the competition. There is a lot of frustration.

Other professional rugby matches have already been postponed this season. In Pro D2, Rouen was thus unable to host Carcassonne on Friday, September 4, 2020 due to several cases of Covid-19 in its ranks.
