False email scam, the Revenue Agency warns taxpayers

The Revenue Agency – Collection has issued a press release in which it invites taxpayers to pay the utmost attention to fraudulent emails arriving under a false name of the Agency itself. These are messages that they contain viruses and malicious software for your PC, or communications not attributable to the Agency.

In the false emails bearing the “Agenzia Entrate” logo, reference is made to inconsistencies in the periodic VAT payments, to new provisions regarding energy efficiency or to generic communication problems with the taxpayer. In all cases there is an attachment in .zip format, or an Excel file with macros (.xlsm), which contain malicious software.

There are three types of messages that the Agency invites not to open:

  • Mail for general communication problems with attached malware – The messages, often containing misspellings and words in other languages, signal general communication problems and indicate the password to open an attached zip archive or an Excel .xlsm file containing malicious software.
  • False communications from the Agency on inconsistencies in the “periodic VAT payments” – The emails have sender “Direction “And subject”custody order in the tax register”.
    The text talks about explanations available in the fiscal drawer or in the archive attached to the e-mail, inside which the malware is located.
  • Message on “Parliamentary Commission for Compliance with the Tax Register” – The sender is “Investigations office “And the subject”Parliamentary commission for compliance with the tax register“. Again, the message has an attachment with malicious content.

The Agency disclaims the content of these messages and recommends discarding them without opening any attachments.
